Rikstens friluftsstad – Where Modern Living Meets Nature

Just south of Stockholm, in Botkyrka municipality, a new vibrant community is taking shape. Rikstens friluftsstad is transforming a former military and civilian airfield into a modern, thriving residential area designed for contemporary life. When fully developed in 2040, the area will be home to more than 3,500 residences and a strong, diverse local community. Developed in close cooperation between Riksten Friluftsstad AB and Botkyrka municipality, this ambitious urban development project combines thoughtful planning, sustainability and quality of life.

A Growing Community for All Stages of Life
Rikstens friluftsstad is growing steadily, with over 100 new homes added each year. Today, around 800 homes are already completed, alongside kindergartens, a school for grades F–9, a retirement home, workplaces, shops and local services. The area has become particularly popular among families with children, attracted by the safe environment, strong community spirit and proximity to nature.

Close to Nature, Close to the City
Rikstens friluftsstad offers attractive homes with immediate access to nature, while still being well connected to public transport and Stockholm’s city life. The urban design is spacious and welcoming, created for people who value an active outdoor lifestyle. Small-scale architecture and carefully planned neighborhoods give the area a lively, human and inviting character. A wide range of housing types and tenures makes it easy to grow and move within the area over time. Here, you can choose from rental apartments and student housing to villas and retirement living – all within the same community.

Development in Close Cooperation with the Municipality
Rikstens friluftsstad is located south of Tullinge and covers approximately 320 hectares. The land is divided into nine local detailed development plans. When fully developed, Riksten will have created new homes, additional jobs, and premises for commercial activities within the area.

Riksten Friluftsstad AB (RFAB)
RFAB is responsible for managing the development, including land exploitation, detailed planning and allocation of building rights. In collaboration with companies within the Peab Group, RFAB also develops public infrastructure such as roads, parks and recreational areas, and participates in the construction and renovation of schools and kindergartens. A close and structured partnership with Botkyrka municipality is a key success factor.

RFAB works actively with safety and security to create a vibrant, safe and inclusive residential environment, while continuously adapting municipal services and local commerce to population growth. Together with the municipality, RFAB also develops joint communication and activity plans and maintains an open dialogue with residents.

With its office located in the heart of the area, RFAB stays close to the community, strengthening engagement, responsiveness and long-term value for those who live and work in Rikstens friluftsstad.

Responding to the Municipality’s Sustainability Challenges
Botkyrka municipality has identified several sustainability challenges that guide ongoing urban development. In Rikstens friluftsstad, great emphasis is placed on high-quality public spaces and well-designed meeting places. Continuous and transparent dialogue with residents is maintained throughout planning and implementation.

Environmental responsibility is a central part of the project, supported by an ambitious and ongoing environmental program specifically developed for Rikstens friluftsstad.
